POETRY TRAVELS with Anna Blasiak and Lisa Kalloo: FOUR FRAGMENTS ON A SHARED SILENCE by Sofia Vaisman Maturana, translated by the Author
I
Lick the salt, the sweat
gathers beneath your breasts –
I follow the curve with my tongue
then roll over
to see, from below,
your face.
Don’t insist on getting dressed
or on finishing
that translation –
coffee in your right hand.
II
You didn’t see the marks
on my leg.
I hit myself with the edge of the frying pan
when you were not there.
I also slammed my hands
against the floorboards.
But then we still smile
at our friends.
III
You taught me to splint
snapped plant stems –
over the days, they heal
and the wind, once more
can rage.
IV
Before mirrors,
there was water:
a shifting face
peering sideways.
I tremble in the wind.
I tell myself
I don’t want to sail
in the dark ever again.
