Balkan Day II: A Rich Heritage of Stories

British LibraryFriday 24 June 2016, 10am – 6pm
Followed by a reception; tickets here.

Following on from the hugely successful Balkan Day event in June 2014, join us for another day of in-depth discussion. This time the focus will be on the southeastern countries of the region, with authors and translators from Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Romania, as well as from Turkey, whose influence on this history of these lands has been profound. The day will feature keynote speeches from author, Kapka Kassabova and Albanian scholar, Robert Elsie, followed by panel discussions:

Authors as Cultural Ambassadors: with Ioana Parvulescu and Aleksandar Prokopiev, chaired by Fiona Sampson

Translators Speak: with John Hodgson, Christopher Buxton, Christopher Moncrief and Mevlut Ceylan, chaired by Christina Pribichevich-Zoric

The discussion will be followed by a screening of the documentary ‘Balkan Sprit’ followed by a Q&A with the director Hermann Vaske.

The European Literature Network was created with the mission of championing great writing from Europe in the UK – and doing it together. Open to writers, translators, publishers, agents, booksellers, festival directors, arts managers and journalists, ELNet is a free, collaborative hub for sharing news and views.

ELNet operates without funding or grants (unfortunately) and is therefore dependent on the passion, professionalism and dedication of our core team and on an extensive network of volunteers, supporters, partners and donors.
