This month our #RivetingReviewers have read new books from Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and – very fittingly in these EU-tense times – a book subtitled Europe on The Brink. So this month you’ve got #RivetingReviews of three novels from three of Europe’s most riveting writers and thinkers: the late, great Europeans Stefan Zweig, Umberto Eco and Máirtin Ó Cadhain. Also, our regular reviewer of all things German reads a collection of contemporary short stories, and our colleague in the Netherlands assesses the state of Dutch non-fiction writing in English – it’s a surprisingly rich field. One of the superb Dutch essayists mentioned in her review is Geert Mak, author of In Europe. He will make a special appearance at our ‘Culture Matters: Euro stars’ event on April 27th. Do come and meet him and his fellow Great Europeans A. L. Kennedy, Misha Glenny, Gianrico Carfiglio and Noemi Szecsi. There will be wine, riveting debate and ofcourse books. Enjoy our #RivetingReads.
