POETRY TRAVELS with Anna Blasiak and Lisa Kalloo: THE VISTULA BOULEVARDS AT NIGHT-TIME by Marlena Zynger, translated by Anna Blasiak

they crept out at dusk from furnished
lairs conformist and narcissistic
white-collared rats
and slimy reptiles drooling over each
skirt driven by
testosterone after a cold-blooded
hunt

they bit into and caked river barges
filled them with cigarette smoke
and lust notes from swollen testicles
they swayed to the rhythm of clinking
and thumping glasses
they cussed in a resounding bass
and only took it down a notch
upon seeing women’s breasts

vodka gushed from red
throats straight under pressed
cuffs and from there between
widely-open female algae eaters
and the folds of reflective dresses
made of silver scales to finally
join the shadowy puddles
of pavements lights

the moon finally paled and hid behind
the clouds foulard and the Vistula – usually
so peaceful – raised its undulating sleeve
in protest and neither the supposedly
intelligent rats nor light sensitive reptiles
noticed anything

The European Literature Network was created with the mission of championing great writing from Europe in the UK – and doing it together. Open to writers, translators, publishers, agents, booksellers, festival directors, arts managers and journalists, ELNet is a free, collaborative hub for sharing news and views.

ELNet operates without funding or grants (unfortunately) and is therefore dependent on the passion, professionalism and dedication of our core team and on an extensive network of volunteers, supporters, partners and donors.
