The first of a trilogy, Middagsmörker (which also translates as ‘Darkness at Midday’) is a YA fantasy novel set in an isolated Sami community in Swedish Lappland. Young Áili discovers she is a shaman with magical powers, which she must use to fight the supernatural forces of evil threatening the Sami people. Much more than just a gripping pageturner, this novel tackles difficult themes, including bullying, outsiderdom and discrimination against an indigenous ethnic minority.
